Listen, I may stan for Coach Penny from time to time but when should we really start taking a closer look at his body of work.
He has a lot of what you would want and look for in a men's coach. He is young, energetic, smart, good recruiter and unproblematic. However, what seems to be his achilles heel, is in game coaching or management of his team and talent.
I think TSU was picked to finish second in the league and just based on early indications we may be looking at a middle of the pack finish.
So do we ride it out with Coach Penny or look for change in the MBB program at some point?

As far as I’m concerned, the seat is already hot. He needs to go at the end of this year if he doesn’t near 20 wins and a nice run in the OVC tournament.
After tonight’s loss, he’s 9-7 for the year. In other years that’s ok, but 4 of those wins are against non-D1 programs. So, he’s really just 5-7.
Even without the COVID year where he finished 4 and 20something, Penny has the lowest Kenpom average of every coach since Richardson III. Lower than Cy Alexander, Cooper, Ford, and Williams. All of these coaches had at least one year/team ranked higher than 200, but not your boy. His highest rank is 259.
The seat should already be hot, because we’re going backwards.

My deadline with Collins, is Jan. 30, 2023, if TSU has not shown a 100% improvement, I will be sending a letter and e-mail to the AD, for what it worth. Letting, him know the program will continue to decline via season tickets - attendance, other than students as long as TSU continue to perform below standards as it has since Collins arrived.
I am so sick of hearing how easy he is to talk with, a great motivational speaker or how young he is. All of that is well and fine. If that's his calling, perhaps he need to become a Car Salesman, have a Talk Show or travel around the Country as a Motivational Speaker with Mike Krzyzewski and Dave Ramsey, .
The announcers said, about SIUE's Coach Brone, hired in 2019, he built the program, starting with two recruits Lamar and Shamar Wright, One transfer on the roster

We seem to start from scratch each year having an entirely new roster. A transfer here and there to fill in the gaps is fine. But several each year is not a way to build sustained success.

Yeah, but even though we got a lot of transfers this year, we still started the year with 7 guys who were on the team last year. In today’s basketball climate, that’s good retention. Should it be better, absolutely. But 7 holders from the previous season allows you to have a culture that the transfers need to adjust to, not determine when they enter.

I like him.
That said, this is year #5. EVERYTHING about the program has your DNA in it year 5; every player, every staff member, everything. There's literally no one else to hold responsible.

I like him also, but - likes don't win.
And I am tired hearing about his time at Belmont and relationship with "Hardaway" if there is any other than coaching.
Hardaway, has his own troubles at UM. although they are 11-4, those folks want a final four.

The seat is not just warm, it's red hot. I predict that based on his body of work, this will be Collins' last year. He has had five (5) years to produce a winner and he hasn't done so, for whatever reason. He was not hired by the current A.D., and I am sure he has some other candidates who would love the opportunity to coach a D1 college basketball team in the weakened OVC with a realistic chance to earn a bid to the NCAA tournament. The AD owes it to TSU to go in a different direction. Of course, if this team does a 180 and runs the table and makes a respectable showing in the NCAA tournament, that would change the calculus. Go Tigers!

Again, I like Penny...but he's not ready yet. He could flourish down the line, but not right now.
Where is John Cooper these days? Last I checked, he was an assistant at SMU or Oklahoma State.

Yeah Coach Penny, has had enough time to turn this thing around in a weakened OVC with the departure of Murray State & Belmont.
It is time to turn the page!

Hopefully Doc Allen is talking to the staff to see who is suitable intrem head coach incase he has to pull the trigger on Collins. Like someone else in group said, if we are not looking better by the 30th, pull the trigger and start searching.
