Denver, the hotels and the one apartment complex total about 725 units. It's hard to determine the actual bed count because the hotels have a mixture of room styles and the apartment complex has 1 and 2 bedroom units. But if we assume that each room and apartment will have at least two students, TSU will need about 1,450 new beds on campus.
Given the housing issues, I doubt that TSU will tearing down any of the old dorms anytime in the near future. I hope that TSU will look to lease an apartment complex in West Nashville that can house more students. Metro Center would be ideal, but most of the complexes are relatively new and will be pretty expensive. They would need to work on that now, because any apartment complex will have to start blocking at units as leases expire. And, the State will probably have to look at buying out leases and relocating tenants.

I think the fastest way is to move athletics out of Hankel Hall and reopen it as a dormitory. That could be done before next fall.
Crazy to me that they used housing space for athletics anyway. Whoever made and approved that decision was not thinking of future growth. Such goes the decision-making skills of certain TSU administrators.

Throw in future growth and we are at 3 additional dorms without tearing down any older dorms. Yeah, someone was not thinking about future growth!! Good problem to have right now. Not so much if it persists in the coming years.

It made sense at the time, enrollment was low and the coaches and staff had offices at Gentry and Kean. The purpose was to centralize all the staff and provide a lounge like environment for the teams. TSU like most colleges, growth was due to the admissions standards being eased (ACT and SAT) was not required to enroll in college. All was required was a minimum of a Cm Average and being admitted to the university. One of the biggest mistake TSU made, was not purchasing the property on Tigerbell Drive. Those homes could have been renovated and used for student housing. The university at one time was interested in Hadley Towers, not sure what happened.

If I read correctly on the website, grant money was used to turn Hankal into what it is now. If that's the case, you're likely going to have to repay any monies that were received to do the work, purchase equipment, etc. tsutigers.com/facilities/hankal-hall/4Hankal Hall The renovated Hankal Hall opened in the spring of 2015. Hankal Hall features a state-of-the-art computer lab, a spacious study room and a lounge for student-athletes. The athletic department’s Academic Services department is on the second floor of Hankal Hall. The offices of the athletic administration, including the Director of Athletics, are in the building. The Tennessee State football coaching staff also has offices in Hankal Hall. TSU Athletic Media Relations offices are housed in the building as well. The renovations were aided by a $900,000 grant from the NCAA to develop enhancements to help student-athletes perform at the highest level.

They would have to rebuild the exact same arrangement in another building to meet the grant if they used my solution of reopening Hankel as a dorm.

This is also why the Football operations building proposal is confusing.

Just not all of it. The Hadley Towers idea was a TSU idea. The City didn't entertain the idea much. Probably because they had done some renovations to the property. However, it might not be a bad idea to resurrect that idea. Is Hadley Park still be used like it once was in terms of baseball and softball for youth leagues, park concerts? If not I'd like to see TSU offer to acquire the park to incorporate it into the campus. Although, I know that might not go over too well with the community.

Plus, I believe it's always sound strategy to have a spare building (or 2) that's already paid for. If you're able to fill them, they're all revenue (minus general maintenance) at that point.

They just remodeled Hankel. The players now have separate rooms to review films and for position meetings and I think a lounge area for the players. There may be a larger area to hold the entire team because they did not report to the cafe for meals during Fall camp. Need to keep that building. I wish they had stadium seating and hi tech equipment like some of the other larger schools. Its coming one day.
Hadley was recently revamped too. Its going strong over there. Metro ain't coming off that property. They need to look at all that property across from the Gentry, I see folks over there every week with cameras. It will be developed soon.

We can also forget about Hadley tower. They can't relocate that many seniors or disabled people. No affordable housing....they say they are working on more affordable housing. No comment on that.....

There are renovating the main cafe area in the student union building. They were just beginning renovations when I was in Nashville mid July. Maybe that’s the reason they didn’t go to the cafe.

Thays one building that really needs to go. It looks like a TSU dorm, but it isn’t. We need all of that land on John A Merritt.

The entire park was part of the plan. I forgot the name of the person, but it was mentioned, since Hadley Park was a Historical Park, the city would not sell it. And If my memory is correct, TSU concern was the access the general public would and they would have to purchase the homes from Kean to 28th.
The other issue was some blacks were complaining "where would we go to" because we are not wanted at Centennial and Cedar Hill. Metro at one time had considered closing Hadley, because to the amount of crime that was happening in the park.
