With the Southern Heritage Classic now gone, it opens up the Liberty Bowl for football action that weekend for the U. of Memphis.
According to fbschedules.com, Memphis' future opponents are pretty much set, outside of 1 game each year. But in 2023, they have an opening
2023
9/9 @ Arkansas State 9/23 - Missouri 9/30 - Boise St
It'll all depend on if Memphis wants to play an out of conference money game on the road, vs a tougher team. Or if they would rather schedule another home game vs a weaker opponent.
With 9/2 ( Labor Day weekend ) already taken up by the Notre Dame game, 9/16 looks like the perfect date for a game vs the U of Memphis. And because TSU fans are used to traveling to Memphis in September, this may be a game that would interest the fan base, in place of JSU.
Of course, it wouldn't have all of the fan fare. But if I'm the U. of Memphis, a matchup vs TSU might serve to be the their 2nd most attended game of the year, outside of homecoming.
If TSU is seriously talking about moving to FBS within the next 5 years, this is the type of game that you need to play to
(1) Establish a relationship with the U. of Memphis athletically (2) Showcase a game that could possibly draw 40K, any time these two schools play in Memphis (3) Make it an attractive regional TV game, if interest is fairly high
U. of Memphis football game average is a little over 30K per game. So getting in their ear and convincing them that TSU would add 10K - 15K fans to that game average, may be an attractive sell for that school to consider adding TSU to the 2023, and future schedules.
And if we make the jump to FBS, the goal should be to play U. of Memphis in Nashville by 2028.

I believe TSU has one more year in its contract with the SHC. There's always been unsubstantiated talk that neither TSU or JSU could play in any other game in Memphis. I was told that wasn't true. That being said, Fred needs to find an opponent.
First, I'd like to see TSU and JSU establish a future home and home game series. If both schools still have the second weekend in September open for next few years, I'd hope they would make the effort to continue the rivalry.
Second, yes it would be nice to play Memphis. It would be a draw for our fanbase in that region and probably would draw fans from Atlanta, parts of Alabama and other parts of Tennessee. Probably not to the tune of the SHC numbers against JSU. Not sure how receptive the UM fans would be to that game either. But, I suspect it would be greater than some of the other mid-level FBS programs.

I am sure we would. It may be easier for Fred. He controls the events. Memphis controls the game.

UM is not going to want Fred involved. They don't need him. Unless you're suggesting that the city contract with him to create events around the game without being directly involved in the game.

That is what I meant. I am not sure who will be interested in the shc. Playing in Memphis would be better than playing Northern American U, Austin Peay, or even Northwestern st. I am not sure about SCSU but I would rather play them at home. It seems odd to have teams drive past Nashville.

SCSU fans probably aren't going to be moved to travel to Memphis. So, if we were to play them, I'd prefer it be at home as I'd prefer most of our games. A game with UM would be a nice fit simply because of our fanbase in Memphis. I guess the AOB and the Might Sound of the South can do a joint performance ... LOL!!!

We could add Memphis, but I would rather do it once we move to FBS. Otherwise, we'd be going there every year. We definitely would need to negotiate some of the gate if we agree to playing them yearly while we're still FCS.
DC, I second the notion of us playing JSU home and home if the SHC is indeed done. Somehow, I feel like we will continue to play in the SHC. Fred has a relationship with Dr. Glover that may overrule anything Dr. Allen may want to do. Not to say he wants out the classic.
I think Alcorn or UAPB would be the most realistic replacements.

They already play half of our music, so it shouldn't be hard for them to learn any of it

South Carolina State in Memphis? Naaaaaaaw. And definitely not every year. What does make sense to me, if I were Fred Jones, I would be heavily campaigning to get Arkansas-Pine Bluff to commit to the Southern Heritage Classic.
As far TSU playing Memphis? I'd travel to see that and my cuzzins there in Memphis. As far as Memphis wanting to schedule TSU as an FCS opponent? Maybe??? But I think it would be more likely IF TSU were an FBS opponent....

TSU - UM, would be the game of the century. Because, that has been one of the questions for years. The Liberty Bowl would be packed. The officiating would have to be independent / from another conference.
No joke, OMG, TSU win, leave before the game is over dem folks will have riot. It would be a replay of the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

There are two years left on the SHC contract. I think TSU will see the contract to its term. After that, who knows. This administration keeps everything close to its vest.

What you think Blue! We're not worthy of playing Southern . . . considering what the "other TSU" just did to them tonight.

You see this? Tennessee State CANNOT let this happen.
