Someone posted on FB that TSU Swimming is coming back? I've not seen an official announcement of this from the athletic department. Anyone in the know?
120, before you state it, yes we know the pool is need of major repair. It is fixable. So, don't get hung up on that in this discussion please.

I heard a full detailed fundraising plan concerning adding sports and improving facilities should come out in the Fall.

Anyone in the know? 120, before you state it, yes we know the pool is need of major repair. It is fixable. So, don't get hung up on that in this discussion please. IMO from what I can observe from the outside "it fixable" well maybe. I am not sure of the condition of the filtration system. I would think, it would have to be replace, because of the fungus and green slime in the system. Size, I would think the pool will be ok, thinking back to the size of the pool that was in the A Building. Not really hung up, TSU just need to take care of what they have in place (period). Honestly, I am just sick and tired of TSU, pointing the fingers at others and looking for a way not to be responsible! We "TSU" has always been better that what we are witnessing. How big is the pool at the swim center? from the internet, not sure if that's true. This complete swim center offers a 50-meter pool, 150-ft water slide, a warm water zero-entry pool & a spray zone play area! However , in the "Overview" The facility houses a basketball arena, indoor track, weight room and an Olympic pool. Olympic size pools measure: 50 metres – 164 ft long , 25 metres – 82 ft wide, and a minimum of 2 metres or 6 ft deep... Not sure when this view of Gentry was taken. Look directly above the entry way and notice there are aluminum strips missing. Currently, there are several missing around the entire complex. At the very top, notice, there appears to be something [black vinyl' flopping in the wind. Around the vinyl should be the aluminum covering, both help keep out moisture and rain water from draining into the facility. Also, on the back side, there are some of the gray vertical panels missing, the "rust" spots on the wall is a results of water. Going towards the track, part of the whited gates are down, and has been for several months. Moving toward the entry, notice the panels [light] are out on the lower parts of the sigh - they have been out / prior to the tornado in 2020. That's what I mean "taking care of what you have' tsutigers.com/facilities/gentry-center/1CurrentlyOverview tsuathleticfund.com/giving-opportunities/capital-projects/gentry-center/index.html

I see you couldn't resist ... LOL!!! So, I'm assuming you've not heard anything about reestablishing the swim program.
The indoor pool is bigger than the pool that was behind the A building. It was built so that TSU could host swim meets indoors. I believe the swim team was still active when I was in school in the early 80s. Seems like I remember them practicing at least during my freshman year in 1980. I believe Coach Starks was their coach. She taught the swim class that I took my freshman year. Unless there are major cracks in the pool the pool is repairable, including the filtration system. Old pool systems are flushed out all the time to restore them to working condition. Now, a true repair may require it to be replaced. Again, not an issue if they have the funding.

Okay you two are a little more seasoned than I. So when you mention pool and A building in the same sentence I'm having trouble picturing that.

When I arrive at TSU (1984), the pool behind the A building was not in use. It was later removed when the campus went through a major renovation. The swim team was operating out of the Gentry Center which is where I took swimming class and racquetball classes.

Picture that grassy area behind the A building, before you get to the brick plaza. That grassy area was the old pool. When I got to TSU in ‘89, you could still see the trace/boundary of the old pool sticking out of the grass.

Yep, but it was directly behind the A building before you got to the plaza and street.

Okay you two are a little more seasoned than I. So when you mention pool and A building in the same sentence I'm having trouble picturing that. This picture shows the location of where the pool was located. It now appears to be an entrance to the backside of the Humanities Building formerly the Administration Building or as we called it the "A Building). The pool was filled in sometime in the 80's. It was not in use when I attended TSU from 1980 to 1984, but the pool was still visible at least during my freshman year. As Madness stated, when the pool was filled in you could still see the perimeter of the pool. For a while the diving board stood above the filled in area. It is my understanding that there were locker rooms underneath the stage of the auditorium in the A Building to serve the pool. I never went into that area. A footnote to the A Building, as well all know there is a cupola on top of the A Building, that serves as an iconic emblem for TSU. When the cupola was built it included a functioning bell that used to be rung every hour and half hour during the day. I actually remember as a kid being in the TSU Campus area and hearing the bell being rung. Due to a crack in the bell, TSU discontinued ringing the bell to preserve it from further damage. TSU installed an electronic chime that rung out from the cupola later. There were complaints from people living in the area so I don't know if the electronic chimes are still be used.

I loved the sound of the chime and hearing the strike on each hour of the day... Nostalgia!!!

TSU also had swimming classes as an elective, for those that wanted to learn how to swim.
I haven't heard the chimes in years. I also, enjoyed the sound. I remember TSU had one of the best farms among HBCU's, with all sorts of animals. And provided guidance to all the AA Farmers in the state. There was a Chicken House, where the Engineering Building is located and at times the Fowl was Foul.

Thanks DC for the history lesson. I had no clue what the "A" Building was. I only know it as "Humanities". You're, right there is a room under the stage in Humanities; looks like it could've been a locker room at some point.
