The ripple effect of Deion Sanders’ hire causes hardship for Star City (Arkansas) standout
When Deion Sanders accepted the head-coaching job at Colorado earlier this month, the ripple effects began. One ripple has now found its way to the small southeast Arkansas town of Star City.
C.J. Turner grew up in Star City – with a population of 2,246 -- and has made the community proud with his prowess on the football field over the past three seasons. He is the No. 3 overall prospect in the state and was the cornerstone of head coach Chris Vereen’s thriving program. He is a 4-Star recruit according to Rivals.com, and rated the No. 19 athlete in the nation for the 2023 class.
“He’s by far the most athletic and talented player I have coached since I’ve been here,” said Vereen, who just completed his fifth season with the Bulldogs. “On top of that, he is just a great kid. He’s ‘Yes sir. No sir,’ and you don’t have to worry about his grades or him getting in any trouble.”
Turner, a multi-position all-state performer, had plenty of college options to choose from over the past two seasons, before pledging his commitment to Colorado back in April. Unfortunately, he has now become a casualty of the Buffaloes’ new hire, as Colorado informed Turner last week that his scholarship offer was rescinded. Adding salt to the wound was the fact that the day before he got the crushing news, Colorado Athletics Director Rick George had called to inform him that the university planned to honor his pledge. Then 24 hours later, the deal was off.
“They just called me and told me straight up that they were going to take another guy out of the portal,” Turner said. “It was tough to find that out.”
“I really don’t even know what I’m going to do now,” Turner said Tuesday afternoon. “There are a lot of emotions and stressing for me, especially being this late in the recruiting process, but I know I just have to control my emotions and keep working.”

I wonder if this kid would consider an hbcu...maybe?
