Birmingham considers more SWAC Football at Legion Field BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - If you’re among many in Birmingham wondering about the fate of Legion Field - it may have more SWAC football in its future. Man did the city of Birmingham roll out the red carpet to the SWAC!! The city will benefit economically but the Universities will gain a windfall if what I read is true.

I don't think it's going that far over here.

Birmingham is my home so I certainly would want this to be a win win for all parties. Sounds like this was initiated by the universities in order to stay on each other's schedule. Not sure what kind of deal the city has with the MCC but whatever it is, it will likely change if it is not as lucrative. Legion Field is an icon and not many wants to see it torn down. There is a relatively new baseball stadium in downtown, but the city kept the 100 plus year old stadium where the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues used to play. The Morehouse/Skeegee Classic is there now (wishing it success). I can see maybe one more classic added to make Legion Field continue to be relevant.
But I doubt the Celebration Bowl will move out of Atlanta even if Birmingham proves to be more profitable. IT'S THE ATL..

A&M and State should be getting at least half a million off of the Magic City Classic. But I still don't see it going anywhere. Mayor Woodfin wants to justify keeping Legion Field which is why he campaigned for another hbcu classic at Legion and got the Tuskegee/Morehouse Classic to move there [for 3 years]. Honestly, other than beating Tuskegee, overall it was a disappointment: nothing like what we are used to in Columbus where it has been played for decades.
I hope that this SWAC CLASSIC is successful: Southern v. Jackson State is definitely a good start altho the Jaguars may not be thrilled about playing JSU in Birmingham. I will DEFINITELY make the 1.5 hour drive for this matchup....and others after this 2-year ride depending on which 2 SWAC teams are playing.
If you end up with say, a UAPB v PVAM....I wouldn't expect a huge crowd. But time will tell

The only thing stopping them now is a horrible season out of Dooley.

I initially thought it was a crazy idea, especially moving the BoomBox, but after watching the interview with the commissioner it appears to be a great deal. He was on point, did a great job of explaining the deal, and elaborated on the rationale. Anyone watching that interview should come away impressed with his commitment to making money for the member schools.
