I can't get into a lot of today's music... I don't mind listening to today's music. But, I do prefer music from the mid 70's, 80's and 90's mostly. The problem is so much of today's music leans heavily to the drumbeats, heavy bass and synthesized sounds that they don't always make good songs for a marching band to play. And, from what I'm hearing from so many of the HBCU bands is they are trying to out blast one another rather then deliver a quality sound. One thing that I like about The AOB, Bethune-Cookman and FAMU is that they are not simply trying to blast you out of the stadium. They all have distinct, crisp, quality sounds. I can pretty much tell when I'm listening to either one of those bands. That's not to say they can't blow, because they can and they do. They just do so with a higher level of control and harmonious quality. Which isn't always appreciated by HBCU fans. Whereas, with most of the SWAC bands in particular they seem to try to be loud more than deliver a quality sound. Southern is my only exception to that theory for SWAC schools. NCA&T might be another MEAC school that I would say has developed a nice sound. But so many of the others are inconsistent and just blow their horns.
