Mike Organ Nashville Tennessean Tennessee State football will hold its first scrimmage of the 2024 preseason Saturday at Hale Stadium.
Coach Eddie George heads into his fourth season with hopes the Tigers will be able to post back-to-back winning records for the first time since going 7-4 in 2016 and 6-5 in 2017. TSU was 6-5 last season.
Here are the three key things George will focus on in the scrimmage, which is closed to the public:
Steady quarterbacking
Draylen Ellis is preparing for his third season as the starting quarterback for the Tigers and George expects to see a maturity and consistency that has been missing throughout Ellis' career.
While he has shown glimpses of being a quarterback capable of getting TSU out of the offensive funk it has been in the past six seasons, he has not played well for long stretches. The Tigers haven't finished higher than fifth place in total offense in the Ohio Valley Conference (now the Big South/OVC) since 2017.
George believes Ellis will benefit from the offense that was installed in the spring under new coordinator and quarterbacks coach Travis Partridge, who spent the previous two seasons at UT Martin.
"We've got someone (Partridge) who's played the position so he's calling the game from the quarterback's eyes," George said. "He's developed quarterbacks. You look at his pedigree at UT Martin over the last couple of years. He took (Dresser Winn) out of the (transfer) portal in July and made him all-conference. Draylen has really taken to being a student of the game because of that."
Ellis, who has started 16 in games, completed 103 of 196 passes for 1,075 yards and five touchdowns last season and rushed for 252 yards and five touchdowns.
George said Tevin Carter, a transfer from Memphis who played in six games for the Tigers, will take snaps with the second-team offense. Ryder Hagan, a redshirt freshman from Overton, and LSU transfer George Hamsley from Memphis will share time on the third unit.
Offensive line maturity
Much of TSU's offensive woes over the years have been due to the struggles on the line. The Tigers ranked 97th in the FCS last season in total offense (302.8 yards).
Two linemen to watch Saturday will be brothers Connor and Ace Meadows from Trenton. Connor Meadows is a 6-foot-4, 300-pound redshirt sophomore transfer from Tennessee, and Ace Meadows is a 6-7, 310-pound freshman. Connor Meadows played two games at UT and Ace Meadows was 247Sports three-star prospect.
Center Alex Valbuena from Ezell-Harding and tackle Veguer Jean-Jumeau from Hillsboro, both former high school standouts, have performed well in the early part of preseason practices.
Safety support
Some shuffling has taken place in the defensive secondary with safeties Josh Green and Jeremiah Josephs no longer on the roster. Josephs was third on the team in tackles (64) and had two interceptions, while Green was fifth in tackles (35) and also had two interceptions.
It means Dion Villiers from Lakeland, Florida, and Tyler Jones, a transfer from Missouri, will get the first chance to become starters. Villiers played in seven games, made six tackles and broke up a pass in 2023; Jones played in eight games, made three tackles and had an interception.
"I'm looking for our safeties to really show up in the run game and the pass game," George said. "They've had challenges in camp with some of the things that we're doing offensively in shifting and motioning. I want to see them get their eyes right and just have the chance to see the total picture."

I have been to one practice. I guess it's to early to tell on what to expect this season. Have a bruised knee - could only watch from a distance.

There's a #74 standing between #58 (Diaby) and #67 (Jean-Jumeau), and #74 is not on the roster. Any idea who that is?
