Bout to bounce! However, I see a lot of improvement.

Thanks for the updates. Just putting my own thoughts to your commentary, it sounds like Ellis is still the favorite to start but Carter is hot on his tail looking just as effective. Oline and play calling is better which gives me hope that we won't see as many 3 and outs this year. And the LB core will be able to recover from losing Beard. That's enough to raise my hopes a little bit.

I like the size of the team as well. Seemed to put in significant work in the weightroom. Lowery was booting them through the uprights. Not sure if I saw punts at all. May not have been paying attention. Coaches were excited and coaching guys up on & off the field. I like what I see so far and it was a stark change in the energy and demeanor of last year's spring game. I like that Ellis came in ready to fight and I saw improvement on his end for sure but IMO if Carter stays healthy he gives you another dimension back there. However, I really like how Ellis is fighting for that #1 spot. The OC knows what he is doing as well, he is not one dimensional in his playcalling. He has something with his RB room.

www.tennessean.com/story/sports/college/2024/04/13/eddie-george-tennessee-state-football-son-eriq-weight-loss-15-pounds-spring-game/73155033007/But Eriq understands he could be even more impactful with more muscle. Especially since he is being asked to play more inside technique as he heads into his sophomore season. "It was hard getting that weight off. I went on a diet of high proteins, ground beef, broccoli, stuff like that, and a lot of water," Eriq said. "It felt good to get it off. But like (Eddie) said, I've got to put it back on now in muscle. That's what I need because I'll need more strength to play inside, which is different from outside. You've got to hold your gaps and stay low because now I'm going to be going up against 300-pounders."

He seemed pretty enthusiastic about what he saw.

BTW, Carter & Hamsley are R-So & Hagan is a R'Fr. You have some building blocks finally at the position if they all continue to develop as QBs.

My take aways-
Offense- for a coach that just got hired I like where we are in terms of installing his offense.
1) I love the motion in the offense. I believe they motioned someone every play. 2) I love that we have incorporated the power read for the QB to pull it. Ellis is easily the best player on this offense he will need to gain yards on the ground. 3) I love the RBs catching the ball out of the backfield 4) the offensive line is still in bad shape. They can’t pass block to save our life. That’s why we don’t see any called deep throws. We have got to get in the portal asap for this position. We don’t need high school kids here we need guys that can come play right now. 5) Didn’t like that most pass plays went to the right. The backside WRs you could tell they were getting pissed. 6) backup QBs I wasn’t impressed by anyone other than 21. The other QBs consistently missed throws and arm strength is very suspect.
Now getting to the defense. I liked the D- Line especially knowing we just lost one of the best players in the country.
LBs and DBs we must get in the portal and find starters to come in and play. We are very bad in the secondary and LB level. Several miscues. CBs running into each other. TEs running free over the middle. And we are very small in size at the DB and LB level. Our safeties and really small.
All in all. Unless we get about 7-12 starters out of the portal coming up. We won’t be to good. We just don’t have the talent level that we have had in the past. Offensively the only person that can make you miss is the QB. WRs are glorified stalk blockers. They really can’t get a chance because anything over a 3 step drop the QB will be dead.

I mentioned Lance, last season.
Have not seen his cousin Fletcher, Navy Academy - 6-3, 210, LB

Only problem with the portal is stud OL are rarely ever in the portal

To add more to context to spring practice, the OC has been campus for approx 3 months and had a few weeks to install parts and aspects of his offense.
Lets be clear, there is a stark difference in where this team is from last year at this point and I was one of thos individuals who stayed on the improvement & change train for Coach EG snd his staff.
Is this team a frontrunner for a conference title? Not sure about that and based on past play probably not, but what I can get excited for is an effort to change and noticable improvements at this juncture.
