Southern football season ticket sales on the rise Eric Dooley has yet to coach his first game as Southern’s new football coach, but hiring the popular former Jaguars assistant is already paying off for the school. Season ticket sales are up by about 1,500 over last year and athletic director Roman Banks is hoping for more. He said the school has sold 6,500 and thinks the number could rise as high as 7,500 with the season just less than three weeks away. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_053b4f28-1cf1-11ed-925f-d37f46c04792.html

Southern coach Eric Dooley gets mixed results from first scrimmage work Saturday Southern coach Eric Dooley used Saturday’s practice to get a look at his team under fire, and the results were mixed. Dooley lauded his team’s execution, but flags flew a little too often from officials, putting a slight damper on his team’s first significant scrimmage work. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_d762d1be-1db0-11ed-a7f2-7780d2e4ca53.html

Junior college transfer Trey Laing bringing more of a pass rush to Southern defense The overhauled Southern defense will have a capable pass rushing defensive end, and his name is not Jordan Lewis. Junior college transfer Trey Laing has been one of the standouts during the Jaguars’ preseason practice, working his way up the ladder with his ability to harass the quarterback. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_3cd70530-1e54-11ed-bcef-6304117dd652.html

Wide receiver Chandler Whitfield happy to be home and playing for Southern The timing wasn’t perfect for Chandler Whitfield’s homecoming, but the Southern receiver isn’t complaining about how his college career has intersected with Southern University. During his fourth year of college and second year as a Jaguar, the former Zachary star finds himself fitting into the up-tempo offense brought in by coach Eric Dooley. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_10da8960-1f54-11ed-ae6a-43e76aa07eff.html

Southern Jaguars take it slow in first major scrimmage of preaseason camp In their first dress rehearsal for the 2022 season, Southern showed a little offense, a little defense and almost none of its up-tempo style on Saturday in its first major scrimmage. The offense got off to a good start with 10 points on its first two possessions, but the defense rallied with an improved pass rush and a goal line stand. Coach Eric Dooley said he was just trying to get the basics down in the approximately 90-play workout. “I saw plays on both sides of the ball and that’s always pleasing,” he said. “I feel we do have some talent out here. The offense got off to a fast start and the defense caught up. In between, those guys competed against each other and that’s what you ask for.” www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_d16b3064-20ba-11ed-bf65-474bb59dc559.html

Southern dodges downpour to get in Tuesday's practice as season opener nears Southern didn’t let a torrential rainstorm Tuesday afternoon completely shut down practice, but the Jaguars did have to make some alterations. Lightning forced them to retreat to the area of A.W. Mumford Stadium underneath the home stands to wait out the storm. Ultimately, the rain stopped and the team returned to the field, but not until the downpour had flooded areas of the campus. www.theadvocate.com/baton_rouge/article_9126743a-2341-11ed-a3a9-7b8e67837e94.html
