Southern set for about 60-play scrimmage Saturday

First-year Southern coach Eric Dooley’s offensive and defensive schemes will begin to come into focus Saturday when the team holds a partial scrimmage in its seventh practice of spring drills.

Dooley is eager to start mixing the X’s and O’s two weeks before the Blue and Gold spring game. It will represent a significant change, at least offensively, from the run-oriented attack of the previous 10 years.

Regardless of how eager Southern football players were to show their wares for first-year head coach Eric Dooley at the first spring scrimmage Saturday, they had to wait 30 minutes.

The Jaguars coach wanted to make sure his team paid their respects to a Southern legend, former baseball coach Roger Cador, who was having the baseball fieldhouse named in his honor.

Southern football coach Eric Dooley pleased by team's progress in scrimmage

Southern football coach Eric Dooley charted 100 plays during his second major scrimmage of spring practice Saturday. Given the temperature reached 82 degrees, his players likely were grateful that he dialed it back a bit at the end.

Dooley said his team had improved since last week’s 60-play effort, especially on defense.

Quarterback BeSean McCray may not be a household name around Southern University football but after Saturday’s spring game performance, he’s knocking on the door.

Even the Jaguars coaching staff had its eyes opened.

McCray completed 17 of 26 passes and threw for 231 yards and three touchdowns as the Gold team defeated the Blue team 33-13 in the Southern University spring football game Saturday at A.W. Mumford Stadium.

All stats are unofficial, but McCray clearly took a big step up that had first-year head coach Eric Dooley taking notice.
